CMAC Welcomes Nigerian Delegation to Learn from Cambodia’s Mine Clearance Success

The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) welcomed a high-level delegation from Nigeria, led by Mr. Mohammed Goni Alkali, General Director/CEO of the North-Eastern Development Commission, for a working visit aimed at learning from Cambodia’s post-conflict recovery, peacebuilding efforts, and internationally recognized mine clearance programs.

Facilitated by the Japanese government through JICA, the visit highlights growing international cooperation in humanitarian demining, with Nigeria and four other African nations seeking to apply Cambodia’s experience to their own post-conflict development.

During the meeting with CMAC director general Heng Ratana, the Nigerian delegation expressed a strong interest in learning from Cambodia’s experience—particularly its recovery from more than three decades of war, national reconciliation through the Win-Win Policy, and the comprehensive peacebuilding process under the leadership of Senate President Hun Sen. The delegation also aimed to understand Cambodia’s post-conflict reconstruction and sustainable development efforts, especially the socio-economic progress achieved through humanitarian mine clearance. Mohammed Goni Alkali conveyed deep appreciation for the achievements of the Royal Government of Cambodia in securing lasting peace and national stability. He specifically praised Cambodia’s successful implementation of its mine action policy, which has gained international recognition.

He expressed hope that CMAC would share its best practices in humanitarian mine clearance and its initiatives to promote community involvement in protecting civilians from landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO). Having experienced a civil war from 1967 to 1970 and ongoing internal conflicts involving more than 250 ethnic groups, Nigeria is eager to draw lessons from Cambodia’s peacebuilding and mine clearance experiences.
