The CMAC conducts a technical training for Lao trainees on the proper application of ALIS demining equipment
On August 11, 2025, Cambodian Mine Action Centre conducted a technical training course on the use of ALIS demining machine for the Lao National Unexploded Ordnance Disposal Organization (UXO Lao) which was held at the actual training site located in Prasat Bakong district, Siem Reap province.
In accordance to the report by Miss Oum Sopheavy, Director of International Cooperation Department, indicates that under generous support of JICS team, CMAC and UXO Lao have marked their cooperation since 2022 on Brush Cutter (BC) technical training course which was implemented from July 25 to September 21, 2022 with 26 trainees. In the meantime, CMAC and UXO LAO are carrying out a new training program regarding the ALIS demining machine, which will be segmented into two phases. The report also stated that the initial phase is an operational training course comprising both theoretical and practical parts, lasting 13 days, from August 11 to August 27, 2025. We will specify the timeframe for the subsequent phase, which involves the follow-up and establishment of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
H.E. Oum Phumro, Deputy Director General of CMAC, addressed that CMAC wholeheartedly welcomed UXO Lao trainees on the ALIS demining machine training implementation and is envisioned that the instructors and technical experts who function with AlIS demining machine will collaborate tirelessly to educate Lao specialists how to properly utilize and operate the machine more effectively in their countries of origin. His Excellency went on to say that Cambodia has been undertaking research on this ALIS demining machine since 2006 with specialists from a Japanese company at the actual minefield in Porpel commune, Sotr Nikum district, in regards to provide trainers with expertise and proficiency in handling ALIS demining machine. His Excellency also mentioned the commencement of conflict along the Cambodia-Thailand border, since Thai forces utilized weapons on Cambodian territory, leaving cluster bombs, and a variety of additional kinds of munitions behind.
Notably, the first phase of this technical training session lasted 13 days and consists of 13 trainees, 11 from UXO Lao and 2 from the National Regulatory Authority (NRA). The course is scheduled to take place in the actual training ground in Porpel commune, Sotr Nikum district, Siem Reap province, and will be focused on eight specific subjects including the overview of ALIS demining machine, maintenance and operations, ALIS metal detector practice, metal detector pinpointing, ground penetration adar (GPR), GPR data acquiring, and GPR data interpreting, under full observant of 2 technical trainers and 6 trainer assistants.
