Vietnam Mine Action Center Delegation Visits CMAC to Learn from Cambodia’s Mine Clearance Success

H.E. Heng Ratana, Delegate of the Royal Government in charge as Director General of CMAC, met with a delegation from the Vietnam Mine Action Center led by Colonel Pham The Anh on November 17 at the CMAC headquarters in Phnom Penh. The delegation visited to learn more about Cambodia’s mine action sector, particularly CMAC’s highly successful and widely recognized mine clearance operations.

During the meeting, H.E. Ratana briefed the delegation on Cambodia’s wartime history, which left millions of unexploded ordnance across the country, and outlined the progress made in mine clearance. H.E. Ratana also highlighted the development of CMAC’s technical capabilities, especially the use of mine clearance equipment incorporating Japanese technology. He explained the deployment of operational teams in high-risk provinces, noting that CMAC has Demining Units (DUs) in provinces that can mobilize teams nationwide to respond quickly to urgent requests from communities and local authorities facing explosive remnants of war.

In response, Colonel Pham The Anh expressed his deep gratitude to CMAC for welcoming the Vietnam Mine Action Center (VNMAC) delegation to study Cambodia’s mine clearance experience and techniques. He praised CMAC’s success and continued efforts in clearing mines and other UXO to save lives and provide safe land for economic development. He added that he hopes the working meeting and upcoming field visits will allow the delegation to gain valuable operational and technical expertise from CMAC specialists to support Vietnam’s mine clearance program. Following the meeting, the delegation will visit a minefield in Svay Rieng province, the Mine Action Technical Institute in Kompong Chhnang province, a minefield in Pursat province, and the Techo Peace Museum in Siem Reap province.
